Poe-Buycks and curator Jenna Hanchard, exploring the intersections of mothering, ancestral inheritance, creative expression, and self-reclamation. Rooted in Kennesha's personal journey through the traditions of the Southern Black church, ancestral memory, and creative reclamation, this conversation considers the ways Black women have long made, nurtured, preserved, and transformed worlds.
Through textiles, imagery, and storytelling, Kennesha's work honors the ancestors whose hands, wisdom, and creative practices continue to shape our lives. Together, Kennesha and Jenna will explore the complexities of inheritance, the ways creativity moves across generations, and what it means to answer the call to create—trusting our intuition, reclaiming our identities as makers of art and worlds, and stepping fully into who we've always been. The artist talk will conclude with an audience Q&A.

Saturday, December 12, 2026 1:30-2:30PM ARTS at King Street Station We Still Dream a Future is a series of free public art activations, installations, exhibitions, performances, and learning experiences designed to help us dream, learn, and grow, taking place throughout the Downtown core. Gallery hours are Wed. – Sat. 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.; First Thursdays 11 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Artist bio: Kennesha N. Poe-Buycks is an artist, writer, cultural archivist and worker rooted in Black Southern traditions of community, activism and joy, currently residing in Seattle, Washington with her family. At the core of her work is a deep need to connect to the world around her - a need that has always found its way out through language and visuals, in whatever form the moment called for.
That need carried her through nearly two decades as a communications professional, through founding Petrichor Creative Studio, through authoring Restoration House (HarperCollins, 2019) and seeing her work featured in outlets like Better Homes & Gardens, Domino and The Washington Post. Now, that same need is pulling her practice somewhere new: a deepening exploration of storytelling that combines visual arts and language, weaving oral history, image and word into work that honors ancestral knowledge while imagining new futures. Curator bio: Jenna Hanchard is an actor, poet, and experimental filmmaker based in Seattle.
Her work moves across film, performance, and poetry to explore the embodied histories of Black women and the possibilities of collective healing. An award-winning broadcast journalist and audio storyteller, she has produced work for the Smithsonian, American Public Media, KUOW and King 5.
